Winter milker Spring time challenges

Posted 24 September 2018

Before After StockRock small

Winter months see many new challenges with more and more dairy farmers chasing a higher winter payout but finding the downside being the surface deterioration of the farm races. We find that by the time the weather comes right through some parts of September these winter milk farms really suffer with lameness issues especially if they have previously used brown rock (more-so).

Get the “Right Stuff"

Get the right Stuff StockRock storage

The weather plays a big part in what we do, we find that the huge demand over winter means storage of Stockrock is a must. Last year we undertook building more storage so we can now hold up to 17,000 tonnes undercover.
We are becoming well known for the consistency of StockRock and more and more farmers and contractors are beginning to realise that to get the “right stuff” it comes
from our Ngakuru Quarry.
Our own farm race contracting side of the StockRock business has been the busiest ever over the last 2 years and our team are well known for their experience in not only doing a great job but having the know-how to help major lameness issues and help with entry/exit race advice. Many people don’t realise that we offer the whole package from consultation, quoting, supply and laying; supply only from quarry and supply and delivery of their StockRock. We also work and consult with farmers' contractors to make sure that they get the best advice. So give me a call, we’re here to help make farmers’ lives better.

new road Ngakuru Quarry

Starting the week before we knocked off for Xmas, working through the Xmas break and through into mid January, the StockRock crew have been at the Ngakuru Quarry upgrading the roads. Shane and his team have upgraded the haul road into the quarry, upgraded the drainage and installed cattle stops for easier access for trucks and trailers. The new StockRock storage shed is also scheduled to start construction soon and be completed by the end of February. This will hold an additional 7000 tonnes of StockRock.

Tractor in the mud

Supplying StockRock dry has been one of our major successes, thanks to our increased storage capacity. The big sheds hold 1000’s of tons (photos above) of StockRock which enables us to have a constant supply all year around. If you don’t have the rock under cover, you’re buggared. We often get trucks turning up at the quarry as soon as it stops raining, (like the next day) simply because the contractors (including ourselves) need to keep moving when we get so far behind with jobs.

This year in particular we have had several situations where farmers had sections of race that crapped out altogether. The race became impassable due to flooding, or the races had broken right through exposing the clay and then turning into a big bog.  - Photo opposite says it eloquently.

Our sheds are big enough that we can crush rock indoors, which it turns out has been hugely  advantageous. The contracting side of the business has had its challenges also. We ensure the rock loaded at the quarry is covered on the Truck and Trailer units so it arrives as dry as possible on-site. The team then work as quickly as possible to get a section of the race ready and lay and re-surface it between the rainfalls.

As if we need more rain… It is fair to say that we have had the most difficult year on record for the most challenging periods to get StockRock laid on farms.
